Student Writing
It was during her days as a student at the University of Nebraska (1890-1895) that Willa Cather decided to
pursue a career in writing. While studying there she collected an inter-generational group of
friends, many of whom were influential in the Lincoln community. These friends encouraged her
writing and supported her as she published in numerous student and community newspapers and
journals. In an effort to shed light on Cather's literary development, her first published short
fiction, poetry, and essays from her college years are available on the Cather
